How to calculate average share price

Multiply each purchase’s shares by its price. Add those purchase values and divide by total shares. Larger purchases carry more weight. With a broker selected, add each buy order’s estimated brokerage and taxes before dividing by the same share count.

Worked example

Buy 100 shares at ₹500 and another 50 at ₹400: purchase value is ₹50,000 + ₹20,000 = ₹70,000. Total shares are 150. ₹70,000 ÷ 150 gives an average of ₹466.67 per share before charges. Simply averaging ₹500 and ₹400 would ignore the different quantities.

Reference: Zerodha’s quantity-weighted buy-average explanation (new tab), read 10 October 2026. This tool models entered purchases only; it does not reconstruct your broker’s holdings.

Keep sales, dividends, splits, bonuses, transfers and other corporate actions outside this calculation. It is a purchase-cost estimate, not a capital-gains tax calculation or a recommendation to buy more. Contract-note rounding and account-specific tariffs can change actual charges.

Stock average calculator FAQ

Add the value of every purchase (shares multiplied by price per share), then divide by the total number of shares. This is a quantity-weighted average, so a larger purchase contributes more than a smaller one.

Yes. Select a broker and pricing plan to add estimated NSE delivery buy-side charges to each purchase before dividing by total shares. The tool includes purchase brokerage, delivery STT, exchange charges, SEBI charges, stamp duty and GST on applicable fees. It excludes sell brokerage, DP sell charges, AMC, account opening, subscriptions and financing.

Each row represents one completed buy order. Combine fills from the same order using their quantity-weighted price, because per-order brokerage caps or minimums apply to an order rather than each fill. Separate buy orders should remain separate rows.

A lower-priced purchase can reduce the weighted average price, but it also increases the amount invested. The calculation does not predict future prices or recommend buying more, and it does not include future selling charges.

This tool estimates the cost of the purchases you enter. It does not account for sales, FIFO tax matching, dividends, transfers, splits, bonuses or other corporate actions. Use your broker’s records and the applicable tax treatment for capital-gains reporting.
